How to calculate asphalt
Asphalt is sold by the ton. One ton covers about 55 sq ft at 3 inches deep, because asphalt weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot. Multiply area by depth and by 0.0060417 to get tons, then add waste.
Formula: tons = area (sq ft) × depth (in) × 0.0060417 × (1 + waste %)
Worked example: 20 ft × 20 ft × 3 in driveway
Area = 20 × 20 = 400 sq ft. Tons: 400 × 3 × 0.0060417 = 7.25. Add 10% waste: 8.0 tons.
How thick?
Driveways for cars are normally 3 inches of asphalt over 6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel. Thin asphalt cracks fast, so do not skimp on depth or base.

Cost tips
Prices on this page are editable estimates, not quotes. Get 2 to 3 local quotes before you buy, and ask if delivery is included. Delivery, tax and waste can change the total a lot. Order a little extra for cuts and breakage, and confirm final quantities with your supplier or a qualified professional.
