How to calculate

Formula: EV annual cost = miles × kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100 × electricity rate. Gas annual cost = miles ÷ miles per gallon × gas price. 5-year saving = (gas annual cost - EV annual cost) × 5.

Worked example: 12,000 miles per year, EV 30 kWh per 100 miles at $0.17 per kWh, gas car 30 miles per gallon at $3.50 per gallon. EV cost = $612.00 per year, gas cost = $1,400.00 per year, saving = $788.00 per year, $3,940.00 over 5 years.

Tips

This compares running cost only. Purchase price, maintenance, insurance and charging equipment are not included, so add those separately if you want a total ownership cost.
