How to calculate mortar

Mortar follows the brick count. A standard brick wall needs about 7 bricks per square foot, and one bag of mortar lays about 35 bricks. Count the bricks first, then divide by 35.

Formula: bags = wall area (sq ft) × 7 × (1 + waste %) ÷ 35, rounded up

Worked example: 10 ft × 8 ft wall

Wall area = 10 × 8 = 80 sq ft. Bricks: 80 × 7 × 1.1 = 616 bricks. Bags: 616 ÷ 35 = 17.6, rounded up to 18 bags.

Which mix?

Type N is standard for most above-grade walls. Type S is stronger and used below grade and for structural work. Always follow your local code.

Cost tips

Prices on this page are editable estimates, not quotes. Get 2 to 3 local quotes before you buy, and ask if delivery is included. Delivery, tax and waste can change the total a lot. Order a little extra for cuts and breakage, and confirm final quantities with your supplier or a qualified professional.
