How to calculate
Formula: annual generation = system size × production per kW. Annual saving = generation × electricity rate. Payback years = system cost ÷ annual saving.
Worked example: cost $20,000, size 8 kW, production 1,400 kWh per kW per year, rate $0.17 per kWh. Generation = 11,200 kWh per year, saving = $1,904.00 per year, payback = 10.50 years.
Tips
Production per kW depends on your roof, direction, shading and local sun. Get a quote from a local installer for your real production number, because this is an estimate only.
