How to calculate wall studs
Studs stand vertically every 16 or 24 inches. Convert the wall length to inches, divide by the spacing, round up, then add one for the end stud. Plates run horizontally: two on top and one at the bottom.
Formula: studs = wall length (in) ÷ spacing, rounded up, + 1, and plates = wall length × 3
Worked example: 20 ft wall, 16 inch spacing
Wall length = 20 ft = 240 in. Spaces: 240 ÷ 16 = 15, plus the end stud: 16 studs. Plates: 20 × 3 = 60 ft.
Openings
Doors and windows need extra king, jack and cripple studs. This calculator counts straight wall studs only, so add extras for openings.

Cost tips
Prices on this page are editable estimates, not quotes. Get 2 to 3 local quotes before you buy, and ask if delivery is included. Delivery, tax and waste can change the total a lot. Order a little extra for cuts and breakage, and confirm final quantities with your supplier or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions
How many studs do I need for a 20 ft wall?
A 20 ft wall at 16 inch spacing needs 16 studs, plus 60 ft of top and bottom plates.
Why is there one extra stud?
Every wall starts and ends with a stud, so studs are always one more than the number of spaces.
What spacing should I use?
16 inches is standard for most walls. 24 inches is used for some non-load-bearing walls.
What are plates?
Plates are the horizontal boards at the top and bottom of the wall. This counts 2 top plates plus 1 bottom plate, which is 3 times the wall length.
Are the prices accurate?
Prices are editable estimates. The defaults are typical US figures, and your local price can be higher or lower.
