How to calculate wallpaper rolls

Wallpaper is sold by the roll. Find the wall area, add waste for pattern matching and cuts, then divide by the coverage per roll and round up.

Formula: rolls = wall area (sq ft) × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per roll, rounded up

Worked example: 12 ft × 10 ft room, 8 ft walls

Wall area = 2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 sq ft. Add 10% waste: 387.2 sq ft. At 56 sq ft per roll: 387.2 ÷ 56 = 6.91, rounded up to 7 rolls.

Pattern matching

Patterned paper wastes more than plain paper, because every strip must line up. Use 15% waste or more for large patterns.

Common room sizes

Includes 10% waste. Rolls cover 56 sq ft. Cost uses $40 per roll.

Cost tips

Prices on this page are editable estimates, not quotes. Get 2 to 3 local quotes before you buy, and ask if delivery is included. Delivery, tax and waste can change the total a lot. Order a little extra for cuts and breakage, and confirm final quantities with your supplier or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

A 12 ft by 10 ft room with 8 ft walls needs 7 rolls at 56 sq ft per roll, with 10% waste.

How much area does a roll cover?

A standard single roll covers about 56 sq ft. Double rolls cover about 112 sq ft. Check the roll label.

Are the prices accurate?

Prices are editable estimates. The defaults are typical US figures, and your local price can be higher or lower.
