How to calculate fence panels and posts
Fence panels sit between posts. Divide the fence length by the panel width and round up for panels. Posts are always one more than panels, because every run starts and ends with a post.
Formula: panels = fence length ÷ panel width, rounded up, and posts = panels + 1
Worked example: 100 ft fence, 8 ft panels
Panels: 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5, rounded up to 13 panels. Posts: 13 + 1 = 14 posts. At 1 bag per post: 14 bags of concrete.
Post depth
Set posts about one third of their length in the ground, and at least 2 ft for a 6 ft fence. Deeper posts stand up to wind much better.
Gates
Gates need their own posts and hardware, so measure the fence line without the gate opening, then add the gate separately.

Cost tips
Prices on this page are editable estimates, not quotes. Get 2 to 3 local quotes before you buy, and ask if delivery is included. Delivery, tax and waste can change the total a lot. Order a little extra for cuts and breakage, and confirm final quantities with your supplier or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions
How many fence panels do I need for 100 ft?
A 100 ft fence with 8 ft panels needs 13 panels and 14 posts, with 1 bag of concrete per post.
How far apart should fence posts be?
6 to 8 ft apart. Panels are usually 6 ft or 8 ft wide, so post spacing matches the panel width.
How deep should fence posts go?
About one third of the post length in the ground, and at least 2 ft for a 6 ft fence.
How much concrete per post?
About 1 bag of 50 lb mix per post for a standard post hole. Deep or wide holes need more.
Does this include gates?
No, gates need their own posts and hardware. Measure the fence line without the gate opening, then add the gate separately.
Are the prices accurate?
Prices are editable estimates. The defaults are typical US figures, and your local price can be higher or lower.
