How to calculate fence stain
Fences have two sides, so first double the fence area. Multiply length by height by 2, then by the number of coats, then divide by the coverage per gallon and round up.
Formula: gallons = length × height × 2 × coats ÷ coverage per gallon, rounded up
Worked example: 100 ft × 6 ft fence, 1 coat
Fence area = 100 × 6 × 2 = 1,200 sq ft. At 150 sq ft per gallon: 1,200 ÷ 150 = 8 gallons.
One side only?
If your neighbour's side is already stained, halve the area. This calculator counts both sides by default.

Cost tips
Prices on this page are editable estimates, not quotes. Get 2 to 3 local quotes before you buy, and ask if delivery is included. Delivery, tax and waste can change the total a lot. Order a little extra for cuts and breakage, and confirm final quantities with your supplier or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions
How much stain do I need for a 100 ft fence?
A 100 ft fence at 6 ft high needs 8 gallons for 1 coat, counting both sides, at 150 sq ft per gallon.
Why both sides?
Fences weather from both sides, and stain protects both. If your neighbour's side is already done, halve the area.
How many coats?
One coat is enough for a refresh. Two coats last longer on new or bare wood.
How much area does a gallon cover?
About 150 sq ft on rough fence wood. Smooth wood covers more, up to 250 sq ft.
Are the prices accurate?
Prices are editable estimates. The defaults are typical US figures, and your local price can be higher or lower.
