How to calculate laminate flooring
Laminate is sold by the box, and each box covers a fixed area. First find the room area, add waste for cuts, then divide by the coverage per box and round up. You cannot buy part of a box.
Formula: boxes = room area (sq ft) × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per box, rounded up
Worked example: 15 ft × 12 ft room
Room area = 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft. Add 10% waste: 198 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box: 198 ÷ 20 = 9.9, rounded up to 10 boxes.
How much waste?
Straight layouts need about 10% extra. Diagonal layouts and rooms with many corners need about 15%, because end cuts pile up.
Expansion gap
Leave about 10 mm around all edges, hidden by skirting or beading. Laminate moves with temperature and humidity, and a tight fit can buckle.

Cost tips
Prices on this page are editable estimates, not quotes. Get 2 to 3 local quotes before you buy, and ask if delivery is included. Delivery, tax and waste can change the total a lot. Order a little extra for cuts and breakage, and confirm final quantities with your supplier or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions
How many boxes of laminate do I need for a 15x12 room?
A 15 ft by 12 ft room needs 10 boxes at 20 sq ft per box, with 10% waste.
How much waste should I add for laminate?
Add 10% for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal layouts or rooms with many corners.
Do I need underlay?
Yes, most laminate needs underlay for sound and moisture. Some planks come with underlay attached, so check the box.
Should I leave an expansion gap?

Are the prices accurate?
Prices are editable estimates. The defaults are typical US figures, and your local price can be higher or lower.
