How to calculate tiles
Tiles are counted one by one. First find the floor area in square feet, convert it to square inches by multiplying by 144, then divide by one tile's area in square inches. Add waste for cuts and breakage.
Formula: tiles = floor area (sq ft) × 144 ÷ (tile length × tile width) × (1 + waste %), rounded up
Worked example: 10 ft × 8 ft floor, 12×12 in tiles
Floor area = 10 × 8 = 80 sq ft, which is 11,520 sq in. One 12×12 tile is 144 sq in, so 11,520 ÷ 144 = 80 tiles. Add 10% waste: 88 tiles.
How much waste?
Straight layouts need about 10% extra. Diagonal layouts and rooms with many corners need about 15%, because every angled cut wastes a tile.
Buy spares
Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch. Tile colours vary between batches, so a later replacement may not match.

Cost tips
Prices on this page are editable estimates, not quotes. Get 2 to 3 local quotes before you buy, and ask if delivery is included. Delivery, tax and waste can change the total a lot. Order a little extra for cuts and breakage, and confirm final quantities with your supplier or a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions
How many tiles do I need for a 10x8 floor?
A 10 ft by 8 ft floor with 12x12 inch tiles needs 88 tiles with 10% waste.
How much waste should I add for tiles?
Add 10% for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal layouts or rooms with many corners.
How do I count tiles for a rectangular tile?
Divide the floor area in square inches by one tile's area in square inches, then add waste. This calculator does that for you.
Should I buy extra tiles?
Yes, keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs. Dye lots change, so later tiles may not match.
Does this include grout and adhesive?
No, this counts tiles only. Grout and adhesive depend on tile size and joint width, so check the product bag.
Are the prices accurate?
Prices are editable estimates. The defaults are typical US figures, and your local price can be higher or lower.
