How to calculate pavers

Pavers are counted one by one. Find the patio area in square feet, convert it to square inches by multiplying by 144, then divide by one paver's area in square inches. Add waste for cuts. Bedding sand is the patio area times 1 inch deep, converted to cubic yards.

Formula: pavers = patio area (sq ft) × 144 ÷ (paver length × paver width) × (1 + waste %), rounded up

Worked example: 12 ft × 10 ft patio, 12×12 in pavers

Patio area = 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft, which is 17,280 sq in. One paver is 144 sq in, so 17,280 ÷ 144 = 120 pavers. Add 10% waste: 132 pavers. Bedding sand at 1 inch deep: 0.37 cubic yards.

Base layers

Patios need about 1 inch of bedding sand over 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel. Driveways need a deeper gravel base. Skipping the base is the most common cause of sinking pavers.

Common patio sizes

Includes 10% waste. Cost uses $3 per paver. Bedding sand not included in cost.

Cost tips

Prices on this page are editable estimates, not quotes. Get 2 to 3 local quotes before you buy, and ask if delivery is included. Delivery, tax and waste can change the total a lot. Order a little extra for cuts and breakage, and confirm final quantities with your supplier or a qualified professional.
